UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call to action for developed and developing countries alike to partner together and move the needle on the greatest challenges our world is facing.

Investing in Our Community

  • 1,894,445 individuals were provided with Food Aid through ten different nonprofits, and 1,290,564 of those individuals rely on these services on a regular basis to have their food needs met
  • 61,985 youth were served through afterschool educational services offered by fifteen different nonprofits
  • 8,181 individuals demonstrated new occupational skills or earned a new educational credential 
  • 2,704 individuals improved their health status through access to health care
  • 163 under-resourced high school students gained financial skills through UCI's Pacific Life LIFEvest Financial Literacy program
  • 5 students who lost a parent without life insurance awarded $15,000 scholarships through Life Lessons Scholarship Program by Life Happens 

Caring for Our environment

  • 18 global environment cleanups and activities in 8 cities around the world
  • 411+ pounds of trash cleared from waterways by Pacific Life Volunteers across the world
  • 169 square miles of Atlantic cod nursery habitat on Georges Bank in New England is being protected from dragging heavy dredges along the seafloor to catch scallops 
  • 48.5 square miles off the coast of Big Sur, California is newly designated as a conservation area, protecting the area from bottom-contact fishing gears  
  • 1,135 set of gillnets and 559 sets of hook long-lines were removed from the Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin area in Cambodia because of WWF’s work with local River Guards 
  • The Nature Conservancy’s research is being used to educate fishing industry leaders on vessel tracking technologies in the Dungeness crab fishery to reduce whale entanglements

Supporting Our Employees

  • 128 schools, attended by the children and grandchildren of 378 Pacific Life employees, were awarded 3Ts of Education grants, totaling $377,500, positively impacting 130,836 students and 5,502 teachers who received training
  • $452,500 in Community Involvement Grants to 32 nonprofits where Pacific Life officers serve as members of the nonprofit's board of directors
  • $823,500 in matching grants supporting employees contributions made through the Pacific Life Foundation's Matching Gifts and United Way Match programs 

Mobilizing Our Workforce

  • 15,000 hours contributed by 2,280 Pacific Life Volunteers, benefiting 200 nonprofits
  • 153,500K+ kits & meals assembled as part of our on-site Weeks of Service events
  • 7,500 children, families and seniors in need benefitted from our annual holiday drive and holiday volunteering
  • 47+ department events included a community-focused project

   

The Pacific Life Foundation & United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Contributions made by the Pacific Life Foundation through the 2024 Annual Grant Cycle and other major grants are specifically impacting the following targets under each of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals.

1. No Poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere

  • Reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions by 2030
  • Ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance by 2030
2. Zero Hunger

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

  • End hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round by 2030
3. Good Health and Well-Being

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

  • Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all
4. Quality Education

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

  • Ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university by 2030
  • Ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy by 2030
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

  • Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value by 2030
  • Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services
10. Reduced Inequalities

Reduce inequality within and among countries

  • Empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status by 2030
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

  • Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage
  • Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries by 2030
  • Ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums by 2030
  • Significantly reduce the number of deaths and the number of people affected and substantially decrease the direct economic losses relative to global gross domestic product caused by disasters, including water-related disasters, with a focus on protecting the poor and people in vulnerable situations by 2030
13. Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

  • Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
14. Life Below Water

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, sea and marine resources for sustainable development

  • By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans
  • By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics
16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

  • Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels
17. Partnership for the Goals

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development 

  • Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships
