Darryl Button Begins Tenure as President and CEO of Pacific Life


NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – April 1, 2022
– Pacific Life today announced Darryl Button has assumed the role of president and CEO, becoming the 15th chief executive in Pacific Life’s 154-year history, following Jim Morris’ planned retirement.

Mr. Button joined Pacific Life in 2017 as chief financial officer (CFO), bringing with him significant experience overseeing corporate and financial strategies, and has been instrumental in improving Pacific Life’s financial strength. As CFO, Mr. Button was responsible for the company’s finance, risk management and corporate development functions, as well as Pacific Life’s investment organization, which manages the general account assets. He was also responsible for the creation of a new business line in 2020 focused on serving institutional clients with pension risk-transfer and 401(k) plan investment solutions.

Prior to joining Pacific Life in March 2017, Mr. Button served for 17 years at Aegon where his last role was CFO and member of the Executive Board of Aegon N.V. He began his career at Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Canada and is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA), and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Mr. Button holds a B.S. in mathematics, actuarial science and statistics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Button succeeds Jim Morris as president and CEO, following his planned retirement after a distinguished career at Pacific Life spanning four decades. Mr. Morris will continue to serve as a director on the board of Pacific Mutual Holding Company, the ultimate parent company of Pacific Life, through the conclusion of his elected term in May 2023.

Mariann Byerwalter has assumed the role of chair of the Pacific Mutual Holding Company board effective today. Ms. Byerwalter has served on the Pacific Mutual Holding Company board since 2005 and has been its lead director since 2019.
