Mr. Shepherd is chairman of BNP Paribas USA and of its subsidiaries BancWest Corporation and Bank of the West. Mr. Shepherd joined Bank of the West in 2004 and held a succession of positions, including general counsel, chief administrative officer, and president. He served as CEO from January 2008 – June 2016, when he assumed the additional role as chairman of BNP Paribas USA. Prior to joining Bank of the West, Mr. Shepherd served as general counsel of The Bank of New York Company, Inc. and of Shawmut National Corporation. He was a partner in the San Francisco law firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, LLP and special counsel to Sullivan & Cromwell. In addition, Mr. Shepherd has served as senior deputy comptroller of the currency, associate counsel to the President of the United States, and deputy assistant attorney general.
Mr. Shepherd is a member of the board of directors of BNP Paribas USA, BancWest Corporation, Bank of the West, and First Hawaiian Bank. He is a member of the Advisory Boards of FTV Capital and Promontory Interfinancial Network, the Executive Committee of the Bay Area Council, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He currently serves as a member of the Investment and Finance Committees of Stanford Health Care, the FDIC Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion, and the Business Executive Council of the University of California.

Mr. Shepherd currently serves as a director of both Pacific Mutual Holding Company and Pacific LifeCorp, and serves on the Compensation & Personnel Committee and the Investment, Finance, and Financial Market Risk Committee.
