For more than 28 years, Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County has been dedicated to eliminating hunger, in addition to developing programs that increase awareness of the hunger problem in Orange County, California. The Food Bank's primary work is collecting and distributing surplus food county-wide.
As a vital link between the food industry and agencies that feed those at risk of hunger, Second Harvest has distributed more than 290 million pounds of food to local residents in need.
The Pacific Life Foundation began its partnership with Second Harvest in 1996 with a small grant. Since then, the Foundation has provided $280,000 in funding primarily for the Mobile Food Pantry which annually provides 5,000 pounds of fresh produce and staple items directly to families in their neighborhoods. In addition, a $175,000 Foundation grant in 2008 was used to purchase two large refrigerated fleet trucks that allow Second Harvest to pick up donated perishable food items that would otherwise go to waste.
At Pacific Life Foundation's annual Grants Reception held on January 24, 2013, Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County was awarded the Walter B. Gerken Community Service Award which included an unrestricted cash contribution of $25,000.
