The idea of multiple insights is the cornerstone of the investment philosophy at Capital Research and Management Company, which manages the American Funds Insurance Series and the American Funds family of mutual funds.

The American Funds Growth-Income and American Funds Growth Portfolios of Pacific Select Fund invest their assets in American Funds Insurance Series Master Growth-Income Fund and Master Growth Fund, respectively. The information below relates to the American Funds Insurance Series Master Growth/Master Growth-Income Fund.

In each of the funds the assets are divided into smaller, more manageable portions. Each manager invests his or her portion as if it were the entire fund and invests only in his or her strongest convictions. The process is coordinated by the adviser’s Investment Committee.

Investors can benefit from this system in several ways. They benefit by having the combined wisdom of multiple backgrounds, insights, points of view and investment philosophies working for them. This approach, which blends teamwork with individual effort, enables the managers to focus on their best ideas. It also provides continuity because, when an investment manager or analyst retires or changes responsibility, only a small portion of the portfolio control changes hands.

Shareholders can also benefit because, over time, having more than one person managing assets provides a layer of diversification that has tended to smooth out the peaks and valleys of investing.

Analysts also play an important role in the success of the multiple manager system. At American Funds, analysts do more than simply make recommendations. They manage money. While portfolio managers are generalists and invest in a wide variety of industries, analysts are specialists and invest in companies in the industries they follow.

This system of using multiple people to manage a single portfolio has been used for almost 50 years by the investment professionals at Capital Research and Management Company. Now this system of managing money is available to investors who turn to Pacific Life or Pacific Life & Annuity for variable life insurance or annuities.

Capital Research manages over $1 trillion.
