PACIFIC LIFE FOUNDATION HOSTS ANNUAL GRANTS RECEPTION, ANNOUNCES $3.3 MILLION IN GRANTS TO OVER 200 NONPROFIT AGENCIES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
$5.5 Million Committed for 2010
Newport Beach, Calif. - (Jan. 26, 2010) - At an early Monday evening reception, the Pacific Life Foundation announced over $3.3 million in grants, ranging from $2,500 to $152,000, to over 200 nonprofit agencies serving Southern California. Overall, the Pacific Life Foundation has committed to provide $5.5 million in charitable funding throughout 2010.
A highlight of the evening was a special presentation of the Walter B. Gerken Community Service Award, along with a $25,000 grant, to the Illumination Foundation. Paul Leon, Executive Director of the organization, was on hand to receive the award and grant from Pacific Life Foundation Chairman Jim Morris and President Bob Haskell. The Pacific Life Foundation has been involved with this grassroots organization since its founding and has committed $625,000 to the organization through 2011. The Illumination Foundation is dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness in Orange County. It does this by providing stable housing and comprehensive, on-site wrap-around services for the families in their program to help them build a future life of independence.
The Pacific Life Foundation provides grants to nonprofit agencies that engage in the areas of arts and culture; civic, community, and environment; education; and health and human services.
Arts and Culture
Twenty-four nonprofit organizations from Southern California received grants within the Arts and Culture category. The following organizations were awarded grants of $10,000: California Science Center Foundation, Irvine Barclay Theater, KOCE-TV Foundation, Laguna Playhouse, Orange County Museum of Art, Orange County Performing Arts Center, Pacific Symphony, and UCI Foundation/Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Of particular note, the following Southern California organization received a grant above $10,000:
- South Coast Repertory: A $20,000 grant to underwrite the Theatre for Young Audiences Program which produces plays designed for children and their families that highlight children's literature.
Civic, Community, and Environment
Twenty organizations from Southern California received grants within the Civic, Community, & Environment area. Those receiving grants of $10,000 include: Bolsa Chica Conservancy, Environmental Nature Center, Marine Animal Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release into the Natural Environment, Miocean Foundation, Pacific Marine Mammal Center, and Volunteer Center Orange County. Those receiving in excess of $10,000 included:
- Aquarium of the Pacific: A $152,000 grant to complete a $441,000 multi-year pledge to create and implement the "Seafood for the Future" program which promotes and educates the public and food industry throughout Southern California on the consumption of seafood from sustainable sources - both wild caught and farm-raised. - Ocean Institute: A $100,000 grant was given to support their Seaside Learning Center which will be located directly on the water at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor.
- Southern California Public Radio: The final payment of $25,000 towards a $100,000 commitment was given for their new Broadcast Center in Pasadena. In addition, a $15,000 grant was provided to help sustain a full-time reporting presence in Orange County.
Education
Within the Education area, 30 Southern California nonprofit agencies received grants. In particular, the following received grants of $10,000: Aquarium of the Pacific, Exchange Club of Newport Harbor, Greater Santa Ana Vitality Foundation, Parent Institute for Quality Education, Regents of California/ COSMOS Program, STOP-GAP, and Vital Link. Agencies receiving a grant over $10,000 included:
- CSU Fullerton/Center for Insurance Studies: $30,000 for general operating support for their Insurance/Actuary Program for undergraduates at CSUF's College of Business and Economics.
- Junior Achievement of Orange County: A $15,000 grant to help fund their economic education programs in K-12 schools in Santa Ana.
- MIND Research Institute: A $100,000 grant towards a multi-year commitment of $500,000 to support their Orange County Math Initiative program which elevates student math achievement in Orange County K-8 schools that perform in the lower three deciles of the Academic Performance Index.
In addition, the Pacific Life Foundation announced it will contribute a total of $359,500 in direct grants to 112 Southern California K-12 schools where there are concentrations of children or grandchildren of Pacific Life employees. A 3T's of Education grant must be designated to one of the following areas: Teacher Training, Textbooks, or Technology.
Health and Human Services
Within the Health and Human Services category, 115 Southern California agencies received grants. Agencies who received $10,000 grants include: 2-1-1 Orange County, Acacia Adult Day Services, AIDS Services Foundation, ALS Association/Orange County Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics/California Chapter 4, American Cancer Society/Orange County Region, Assistance League of Newport Mesa, Assistance League of Orange, Boot Camp for New Dads, Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana, California Premature Infant Health Coalition, Community Action Partnership of Orange County, Community Service Programs, Court Appointed Special Advocates Orange County, Dayle McIntosh, Food Finders, Friendly Center, Health Funders Partnership Orange County, H.O.M.E.S., Hoag Hospital Foundation, Human Options, John Henry Foundation, Mariposa Women and Family Center, Mission Hospital's Camino Health Center, oc adult day services coalition, Project HOPE School Foundation, Serving People In Need, Share Our Selves, Volunteer Center of Riverside, WISEPlace, and YMCA of Orange County. Recipients receiving larger grants included:
- AccessOC: A $25,000 grant to complete a $350,000 multi-year commitment for their program that provides free surgical services to low-income and uninsured adults in Orange County.
- AltaMed Health Services: A $50,000 grant to support the renovation efforts of their Huntington Beach Community Clinic which will provide more space to help meet the need for medical care services for low-income individuals and families.
- Illumination Foundation: A $150,000 grant towards a $625,000 commitment to help the grassroots agency break the cycle of homelessness for destitute families in Orange County by providing emergency and transitional shelter and wraparound health and social services.
- Interval House: A $50,000 grant to complete a $100,000 commitment for the expansion of their domestic violence shelter in Midway City which serves battered women and their children. An additional $10,000 grant was provided to help fund their Domestic Violence Outreach to Underserved Victims Program, which serves abused immigrant women.
- J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center: A $100,000 grant to help support the final phase of their $12 million major renovation project to enhance and expand their facility in San Juan Capistrano for people with disabilities.
- Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America: A $25,000 grant towards a $100,000 commitment for their new Outdoor Education Center for youth and families.
- Orange County Funders Roundtable: A final $250,000 grant to complete a $1.1 million pledge to help fund the "Nonprofit Capacity-Building" project. The project has helped ten Orange County nonprofit agencies build their capacity to better serve their clients.
- Talk About Curing Autism: An $88,000 grant to complete a $300,000 commitment to implement programs designed to help underserved families in Orange County navigate the diagnosis and care process for their child with autism.
In addition to the $3.3 million announced for Southern California agencies during the reception, the Pacific Life Foundation announced two national grants for 2010. A $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross has been awarded for their Disaster Relief Fund which provides immediate shelter, food, and other support to people affected by disasters, including the recent earthquake in Haiti. The other national grant is to Canine Companions for Independence. This $100,000 grant will be used to expand their Wounded Veterans Outreach Initiative which provides assistance dogs to veterans with physical disabilities. Finally, the Pacific Life Foundation has also pledged to contribute a total of $550,000 towards marine mammal protection and education programs in 2010 and will provide up to $290,000 in matching funds for Pacific Life employee donations to their local United Ways in 2010.
