Business History
Mr. Sutton was an actuarial trainee with Confederation Life during the summers of 1961 and 1962, and with Pacific Life in the summers of 1963 and 1964. He joined Pacific Life full time in 1965 and progressed through a series of actuarial and management positions in the Life Insurance and Corporate Divisions until his September 1, 1987 election as president and member of the board of directors. On January 1, 1990, Mr. Sutton became chairman of the board and chief executive officer.

On April 2, 2007, Mr. Sutton completed 17 years as chairman and chief executive officer of Pacific Life.  In June of that same year, he retired as an employee of the company, ending a 43-year career at Pacific Life.  He continues to serve as a director of Pacific Mutual Holding Company and Pacific LifeCorp.

Mr. Sutton is also a director of Edison International.
